Bid to get CCTV camera to make intersection safer ANDREW KING

A surveillance camera installed to deter prostitution could be used to show how dangerous a Harewood intersection is. Residents near the Breens, Harewood and Gardiners Rd intersection have raised serious safety concerns to the community board about children crossing and near misses. The Breens, Harewood and Gardiners Rd intersection has put locals off letting their children cycle or walk to school and has drivers avoiding it. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board deputy chairman David Cartwright (left) said using a camera, like one on Manchester St, St Albans, would allow everyone to see the full picture. The Manchester St camera was installed on April 4 to deter clients visiting sex workers in the residential area. Residents near the Breens, Harewood and Gardiners Rd intersection have raised serious safety concerns to the community board about children crossing and near misses. Board deputy chairman David

INSIDE:

Cartwright has asked for a temporary camera, like the one used on the corner of Manchester and Purchas Sts, to monitor the intersection. “We have heard from CTOC that for every one reported crash, there are 19 unreported ones. This will give us the full picture, he said. Breens Intermediate principal Nikki Clarke said it was a great idea and was fully behind it. “We try to encourage scooting, biking and walking to school but it is hard with this intersection . . . this will show the full picture, she said. Harewood resident Julianne Grant was delighted to hear something is being done. “It will show just what the community has been saying. It will show the near misses and just how fast people are travelling along that piece of road, she said.

The Manchester St camera, a idea of city councillor Ali Jones, was installed to deter sex workers operating in the residential area of the street. It has another week to go on its free two week trial loan from ATF. Resident Matt Bonis praised the camera saying less and less clients are visiting the girls in the area. “It has really picked up the mood of the neighbourhood. One of our neighbours was at the end of his tether and we were worried about his mental health over this issue, he said. New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective spokeswoman Anna Reed said the camera trial was a good idea to solve a long standing problem. “If they move back over Bealey Ave that would be better for everyone, she said.

Fire alarms could have saved church ANDREW KING Fire alarms could have saved a Bishopdale church from serious damage. A deliberately lit fire at the back of St Margaret’s Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning has seriously damaged the building to the point it may have to be pulled down.

Specialist fire investigator Bruce Irvine said the lack of early detection systems has allowed the fire to get to the point where it could do serious damage. “Fire doubles in size every 30 seconds,” he said. “Because of that there has been a significant delay before crews could attend the fire . . . it is highly unlikely

that the building can be saved and will probably be pulled down.” Minister Andrew Nicol said the building completely complied with the fire code. “Everything complied with the code. Now we have to maintain as much normal activity as we can onsite,” he said. Mr Irvine said it was a common

thing for churches and community centres not to have fire alarms because under the fire code they are not required too. “We have community facilities that are susceptible because of the code,” he said. Police have arrested a man in his 30s in connection with the fire.

Rangi Ruru plans for the tech age

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students are being prepared for jobs that don’t even exist yet with the launch of a new Creative Technology Hub on campus. The hub opened yesterday and is available to all students to assist learning in a range of different subjects, such as coding and robotics. Principal Sandra Hastie said the school absolutely understands the importance of putting the right emphasis on STEM subjects, science, technology, engineering and maths, particularly for girls. “The hub will support students to prepare for a future where most of the jobs they will be working in don’t even exist yet,” she said. “Our students are able to take their own personal interests in technology and grow them with essential skills in areas including coding, robotics, gaming, app development, 3D printing and technology, web design and the interactive digital world.” The hub is a re-purposed space with new equipment and the FUTURE-PROOFING: Rangi Ruru students watch a robot make its way bringing together of resourcing. through a maze.

Performers theatre dreams a step closer GEORGIA O’CONNOR-HARDING

Two promising performers are one step closer to their dreams after being accepted into the The Edge Performers School in Melbourne. St Albans Jack Duff and Papanui Jack Shatford of were not only accepted into the performing arts schoolthey won full scholarships to cover their tuition fees. They were two of three students from Impact Dance and Stage School who won the scholarships worth $8900 Australian. “I was very surprised. Because I thought I did a bad audition...I was shocked,” Mr Shatford said. The Edge Performers School specialises in commercial jazz, musical theatre, acrobatics and singing. Impact Stage and Dance School director Mandy Roberts said she was very proud of her students who she had been training since they were in primary school. She described her students as self-disciplined, hard-working and “nice boys”.

On top of being involved in numerous productions this year, Mr Duff has been attending Canterbury University while Mr Shatford has been at Hagley Community College. Both performers are hoping to pursue careers in the musical theatre industry. Mr Duff (left) said he has decided to put his bachelor of law and arts on hold after deciding to pursue working in the musical theatre industry. He said he is still considering his options but is looking at performing arts schools in Melbourne. “I’ve always wanted to live in Melbourne...it is just such a vibrant city and has such a strong cultural scene” Mr Duff hopes one day to be involved in a large musical theatre production overseas. “It sounds like so much fun. Just one big adventure...its so central to musical theatre in Australasia,” Mr Shatford said. Both Mr Duff and Mr Shatford are involved in Showbiz Christchurch’s upcoming production of Hairspray at the Isaac Theatre Royal next month.

$76m arterial plan criticised BY ANDREW KING

The St Albans Residents Association says $76m allocated for the Northern Arterial Extension and the Cranford St upgrade could be used for commuter transport projects. The city council released its draft annual plan last week and is now considering $76m to fund two projects in the amended long term plan. Last year it voted to remove the $50m funding provision for the Northern Arterial extension and Cranford St upgrade projects from its long term plan. SARA co-chairwoman Emma Twadell said the funding would be better spent on commuter travel, public transport and a cycleway out to Waimakiriri Bridge and beyond rather than dumping a heap of traffic in their backyards. “Research in other cities proves bigger roads do not solve congestion,” she said. “Car pooling lanes, bus lanes, park and ride facilities and easier access for buses to get into the city centre would be better options than another motorway.” Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson

Les McFadden

Rugby stalwart big part The Belfast Rugby Club will celebrate 100 years of playing the code over Queen’s Birthday weekend. A face that has been behind the scenes for 60-plus years is Les McFadden. He speaks with Andrew King about players that have come through the club, his love for the community and what he thinks about the new Super Rugby format Hi Les, tell us how long you have been involved in the Belfast Rugby Club for? I have been involved with the club since 1953. I started playing for them in the under five stone 10 pound grade from memory. I played right through the grades but didn’t make the premier side due to injury. I then got involved with the committee when I was 17. That seems like an early age to get into the committee. Yeah, it was but I was sort of roped into it (laughing). I am a life member now and still get involved with all the funding stuff for the club. The club is celebrating its 100th on Queen’s Birthday weekend, should be a big one? Yeah, it will be a good one. We have a whole range of things planned for it. Steve Tew and a

few others will be there. Unfortunately ex-club member Wayne Smith won’t be able to make it due to All Black commitments but we have three days worth of celebrations so it should be a good event. Your connection to rugby runs quite deep then, you also work with the Canterbury Rugby Football Union? Yes I do. I am team leader of the liaison officer group for the union. I was the assistant to Alex “Grizz” Wyllie for the Canterbury A team from 1982 to 1985 and we held onto the Ranfurly Shield for three years after we nicked it from Wellington, around 25 defences I think. Between 1986 and 1995 I floated between being the manager and assistant manager of the Canterbury team. On top of that I am also the All Black

liaison officer when they are playing here, I have done that for more than 20 years. What is it like to have a connection to the All Blacks for more than 20 years? It’s great. They are such a

great set of blokes, so down to earth. I don’t ever really talk rugby with them as they probably do enough of that already. I do all the bookings for where they stay, train, relax and put together an itinerary with all the

things they want to do while in Christchurch. Unfortunately after the earthquakes, we are a bit short of venues for them but that will come right. Who has been your favourite to get to know over the years? Daniel Carter and Richie McCaw used to wind me up a bit about Belfast but they are complete gentlemen. You can’t say enough about Richie, the man is a legend. They are brilliant around the kids, but that is what they are there to do.

of Belfast centenary They are role models and all the aspiring All Blacks look up to them. In 63 years around the Belfast club you must have seen some changes? We have the same story that repeats quite often when it comes to our players getting picked off by the high school squads. We will have players come through the junior ranks and show some promise, but then head off to high school and start playing for their first teams. For this reason we have struggled in the top division for quite a while. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is the atmosphere in the clubrooms on Saturday. It is always full of kids and adults and it is buzzing. Who has been some of the standout players you have seen come through Belfast? Bill Bush is still in the club and is a life member. He was a great player for us, the All Blacks and the New Zealand Maori team in the 70s. Then of course there is Wayne Smith who was an All Black and turned out to be pretty handy in the coaching box. They came up through the club. We have had some All Blacks that were

HOME: Mr McFadden calls the The Belfast Sports and Community Centre his second home, something his wife agrees with.

not playing for us at the time but have played for the club like Todd Blackadder. We have had a lot of Canterbury representatives. Also Sonny Bill Williams played for us. How has the development of the club over the years been, has it grown? We now have 20-odd junior teams and up to the age of about 15-16 we keep them then they go off to high school teams. That has been a big issue for our top teams. It is a real struggle with

players but the clubrooms really thrive on Saturday night. Tell me what impact the club has had on your life? The wife reckons it is my first home (laughing). We have a great facility and it is used by a lot of the community. It is a great place to be involved in. Once upon a time we were way out in the country than now here we are in the city. I have spent the majority of my life in or around the clubrooms. Hopefully, we can keep a team

in the top flight, we won’t bow out through lack of trying. The club is only part of what I get involved with in the community. I am a Rotary member, on the Belfast Emergency Response Plan committee alongside all the work for the CRFU and the historical union. You were awarded a Queen’s Service Medal and a Local Hero Medal for your services to rugby and the community, how did that feel? It was alright, if I am being honest it was a bit embarrassing as a lot of other people do a lot of work behind the scenes as well. There are a lot of people around that are pillars of the rugby community that should all be recognised. You mentioned you were married, can you tell me about your family? Yes. I married Elaine 52 years ago and we have three children. Are they all still in Christchurch? No, we have two overseas and one here in Christchurch. Kim our daughter she is the oldest and lives in Australia, Greg works for a big fencing company in Oklahoma, and Dayle is an administrator for Smiths City

here in Christchurch. Oklahoma, is he a big basketball fan? The biggest. He has season tickets to all of the home games and loves the fact that Steven Adams is over there getting stuck into some of those soft Americans (laughing). He has actually managed to get a bunch of signed Steven Adams gear for our 100-year celebration in June. We will raffle it off to raise some money for the club. Have you been over to the United States? Yeah, we haven’t been for a while. But my daughter is over in mid-June. And my son will be here mid-June also so that will be good. He comes every year. Finally what is your impression of the new and improved Super 18 format? It is messy. I don’t like the fact that you don’t play everyone. Some of the new Zealand teams have more points than other teams leading their conferences. It has got to unwieldy but it is no surprise the Kiwi squads are at the top. We have such a fantastic understanding of the game. • Club feature, pages 8-9

Belfast club set to celebrate ANDREW KING

Belfast Rugby Club will celebrate 100 years of rugby on Queen’s Birthday weekend, something the club was not expecting to do until 2047. Originally it was thought the club formed in 1947, just after World War 2 and it celebrated its 25 years in 1972 and 50 years in 1997. It wasn’t until club stalwart and life member Les McFadden found an application to register a Belfast team in 1908 that they realised the club was older than first thought. Belfast played their first game that year against the Richmond Rugby Club. It had teams in the Canterbury Rugby Football Union competition from 1908 until 1938 and from 1939 went into recess during World War 2 as a number of the players were drafted into the war. As the club was not playing for eight years, its 100th year actively playing rugby is this year. Records prior to the 1947 team a few and far between with a couple of team lists from 1908 found a photo of the 1935 team. Mr McFadden found a clipping from the Christchurch Star April 8, 1908 which said “the colours of green and gold were

New church unites congregations ANDREW KING

The St Albans Uniting Parish opened its doors to its congregation for the first time on Sunday since completely rebuilding its church. The church was rebuilt after the February 22, 2011, earthquake damaged the hall beyond repair. Now the groups and parishioners are coming back hungry for a space to worship and use for community activities. Reverend Hugh Perry has been with the parish for eight years and said the church was built with the future in mind. “The worship area sits 200 and we currently have a congregation of around 40, so we have plenty of room to grow into,” he said. He said most of the groups they had before the rebuild had come back to book space. The parish is a coming together of two Methodist congregations and one Presbyterian group. St Albans Presbyterian Church on Berwick St and St Albans Methodist Church on Rugby St merged onto the Aldred Methodist Church site on the corner of Nancy Ave and Knowles St. It was renamed the St Albans Uniting Parish to symbolise the coming together of congregations. At the start of 2015 the old church was demolished, in late February the foundations were laid for the new building and it was completed on April 18. “I am pretty chuffed with the whole thing, it’s a great worship space. We want to be the local point that every-

one can come together and have a great space to use,” he said. Rev Perry said the area was lacking community space where the residents can attend groups or meet who is around them. “We will have the Menzshed here, plenty of rooms to hold workshops or classes in and the community garden will provide locals with fresh vegetables,” he said. Its garden is already a success after recently winning both the community garden and best yield award in the ShirleyPapanui Edible Garden Awards.

A tale of two lives

13

ANDREW KING

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and Christ’s College students have come together to put on the production Our House which opens tomorrow. It’s a musical that explores the themes of love, family values, growing up, responsibility and dealing with losing the people that shape us. Our House follows lead character Joe, played by Christ’s Henry Rolleston, and the two different paths his life could head down after his 16th birthday. One path means a criminal record and social exclusion, while the other will lose him the girl he loves, Sarah, played by Rangi Ruru’s Cassie Henderson. It spans seven years, during the two alternative lives, Joe deals with the consequences. All of these choices and decisions are watched over by Joe’s deceased father who pulls the two stories, the two very different lives, together. Christ’s College’s director of drama and co-director David Chambers said the producers from both schools are delighted by the high calibre of the actors and the production team. “It is a multi-talented cast headed by the two leading characters who have the triple threat quality of being able to act, sing and dance,” he said. “Cassie Henderson, wellknown from TV’s X-Factor,

plays Sarah, the lead female role and the lead male role is taken by Henry Rolleston who played the title role in the Christ’s College 2015 production of Dr Faustus.” Rangi Ruru’s dance teacher and co-director Hannah Clarkson said it’s a modern musical full of anarchy, madness and mayhem. “It’s one of those productions when the final package is more than the sum of the individual elements,” she said. With a cast of over 60, Our House presents the top actors from Rangi Ruru including Ella Minehan Fitzgerald and Electra Scott playing Sarah’s best mates, and Kathryn Ford as Joe’s mother. Christ’s College’s Jack Crossland plays Joe’s father, and Benji Clark, Devereux Roberts are

Joe’s best mates and Reid Edmond plays Vagabond Reecy. Our House was first produced at the Cambridge Theatre, London, on October 28, 2002. The show starts tomorrow and runs through to May 21 in the Christ’s College Auditorium with curtain up at 7.30pm.

Alzheimers Canterbury is looking for recruits to join its volunteering service by becoming a companion, activities assistant, or driver for people with dementia. A companion visits an Alzheimers Canterbury client on a weekly or fortnightly basis. They may go for a walk, watch a movie or have a cup of tea and a chat. Alzheimers Canterbury volunteer co-ordinator Monique Schoneveld said they are trying to help dementia sufferers have “fun and meaningful” lives. “We want clients in our community to live well with dementia, to have fun and meaningful lives. Volunteers can play a huge role in this often being the highlight of their day,” she said. Activity assistants help with a community activities pro-

gramme run through Alzheimers Canterbury, and give clients opportunities to enjoy the things they used to in a normalised, safe and supported setting. Activities include swimming, community gardening, art appreciation, baking for Ronald McDonald House, and others. Another way to make a client’s day is as a personal driver. Many clients have lost their driver’s license so transport can be an everyday hurdle. To make sure a volunteer is compatible with a client, there is a matching service run through Alzheimers Canterbury, which ensures a match. Crew’s success draws young dancers ANDREW KING

Zion Studios has seen a huge increase in students after its recent success at the World Hip-Hop Championships in the Caribbean. The Papanui hip-hop dance studio’s adult team placed second after winning the national competition held in Martinique. Now aspiring dancers are flocking to the classes to get involved. Manager Carissa Crow said the roll normally sits around 100 students. “We currently have 220 enrolled. Around an extra 120 that we are used to,” she said.

EQC UPDATE

15

KEEPING YOU INFORMED | MAY 2016

EQC’s approach to its repair obligations There has been some discussion about how the Earthquake Commission meets its obligations under the Earthquake Commission Act (EQC Act) following the release of the Joint Statement agreed with a group of Canterbury homeowners, the EQC Action Group. Information on what the joint statement means for customers and how customers can request a review of their claim can be found at www.eqc.govt.nz

Land settlements update

EQC is now working on the remaining eleven percent of green zone properties and red zone properties (not owned by the Crown), which still need their land claims resolved. “From a total of 73,000 such properties which had land claims, there are now around 8,000 where the land claims still need to be settled by EQC,” says EQC Head of Canterbury Land Settlement, Keith Land. This year EQC is aiming to complete these remaining land damage settlements, with the majority of work focusing on claims for Increased Liquefaction Vulnerability (ILV) and Increased Flooding Vulnerability (IFV) land damage.

2. in reinstating the building to a condition substantially the same as but not better or more extensive than its condition when new

ILV land damage settlements on the basis of repair cost

Some of the commentary following the Joint Statement focused on the concept of “when new”, which refers to when the house was new. While “when new” is one element, EQC needs to take into account each of the three main elements, when meeting its obligations under the Act. For instance, the concept of when new needs to be seen in light of complying with any applicable laws.

“We are planning to start contacting customers in early June who, based on the information we have to date, have the opportunity to complete a ground repair on their property to address the ILV land damage,” says Mr Land. Before the repair cost settlements can be made, EQC will be working closely with these customers to understand their plans for rebuilding on the site and whether the plans include any ground repair.

Together with resolving remaining IFV claims, the priority now is on settlements for the around 4,400 ILV customers. Some properties have both ILV and IFV land damage. “We’re on track to start making the first payments to ILV customers from late June,” says Mr Land. Settlements for ILV land damage will be made by cash payment, in line with how IFV and other types of land damage from the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes have been settled to date. ILV settlements will be based on one of two approaches: repair cost, or reduction in market value of the property due to ILV land damage – also called Diminution of Value (DOV). Information on ILV, and details of these settlement approaches, including answers to a number of questions, can be found on the EQC website at www.eqc.govt.nz/ILV

ILV land damage settlements on the basis of DOV EQC expects that most ILV properties will be settled solely on the basis of DOV. This is because, where the house has remained in place after the earthquakes (as many have), there will not generally be repair methods available to repair ILV damage on the property. The first payments made in late June will be to those customers with ILV land damage whose settlements are based on DOV. “The ILV DOV approach and settlement amounts will be similar to how we’ve been handling IFV claims,” says Mr Land.

Claim deadline looming

The deadline for lodging a claim is 30 May 2016.

Christchurch residents whose homes suffered damage in the 29 February 2016 earthquake still have time to lodge a claim with EQC.

EQC encourages anyone whose home suffered damage in this event to make a claim even if the damage appears minor.

This deadline does not stop you from lodging a new claim with EQC if your dwelling incurs new damage as part of recent or future quakes.

3. modified as necessary to comply with any applicable laws.

“We will have a dedicated team case managing these customers to ensure EQC has a good understanding of their situation and they are kept up-to-date with their claim’s status,” says Mr Land.

Land assessments and settlements in general “We have identified different types of land damage – visible land damage, IFV and ILV. For each type of land damage, we use a range of assessment processes that allow the appropriate settlement for each customer and are consistent with the legislation in place. “Each property is different and is assessed on a case-by-case basis, so one customer’s settlement is not indicative of another’s,” says Mr Land.

As of early May, 60 percent of potential Increased Flooding Vulnerability (IFV) customers (9,600) have had their IFV claims resolved. This also includes any outstanding visible land damage settlements these customers may have.

1. the costs which would be reasonably incurred

“We’ve been working closely with customer advocates groups to make sure the settlement communications our customers receive is clear and helps them understand our decision.”

Work is underway to determine the settlements for ILV customers whose payments can be based on repair cost.

Keith Land, EQC Head of Canterbury Land Settlement

EQC acknowledges that every homeowner affected by earthquake damage faces a set of circumstances specific to their property and that a different repair strategy is likely to be applied in each case. That said, EQC uses some general principles when making its decisions. EQC insures an earthquake-damaged house for its replacement value up to a certain cap, usually $115,000 including GST, according to the EQC Act. Given there has been some confusion about what “replacement value” means, it’s worth having a close look at the definition in the EQC Act, which includes three main elements:

How ‘replacement value’ may apply in practice Example 1

For more information on the approach to land claims and their settlement, visit www.eqc.govt.nz/land.

Following an earthquake, a brick chimney falls through the corrugated iron roof of a 1900s-era villa.

“We also have an open and robust review process in place for those customers who want us to review our decisions on whether their insured land has damage and/or the settlement amount paid,” says Mr Land.

The falling chimney smashes through the ceiling, shattering a ceramic light fitting that was already badly deteriorated prior to the earthquake.

Check out www.eqc.govt.nz/landreview for more information on land settlement review.

Land settlements for red zone properties EQC is assessing all residential land claims across Canterbury in a consistent way – whether they are green zone properties or red zone properties. The Government’s decisions related to the red zone are separate from EQC’s decisions related to the assessment and settlement of land damage claims. As agreed with CERA and now Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), EQC’s priority continues to be to resolve land damage claims for properties in the green zone and those in the red zone, whose owners did not accept a Crown offer. “However, we continue to work with LINZ, which has taken over management of the around 7,000 Crown owned red zone properties. We expect to agree a settlement approach with LINZ in the second half of 2016, applying the same policies EQC has used to settle green zone claims,” says Mr Land.

EQC has so far received just over 10,500 building, contents and land claims since the first quake on Valentine’s Day. People can lodge claims with EQC online at www.eqc. govt.nz/claims via email on info@eqc.govt.nz or by calling 0800 DAMAGE (0800 326 243). The EQC call centre is open 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 6pm on Saturdays.

To repair the roof, the corrugated iron in the area where the chimney fell would be replaced with new corrugated iron. If corrugated iron of the same type as the damaged iron is not available because it is no longer manufactured, the new corrugated iron would be a modern product, which matches as closely as possible the profile of the damaged corrugated iron. In some situations, the new corrugated iron may be coloured steel or the corrugated iron may need to be repainted to match the colour of the existing roof. EQC may also need to reinstate or replace non-damaged parts of the roof that need to be removed in order to repair the earthquake damage, such as the iron ridging on the roof peak. The repair work to the roof would be carried out to ensure the work meets applicable laws such as the performance standards in the Building Code. The light fitting would be replaced. If the existing wiring couldn’t be safely reconnected to the light fitting then an Electrical Safety Inspection would be required. The wiring would need replacing to a point where the electrician determines it can safely be reconnected, and to meet any legal requirements for that work. Example 2 An earthquake damages the so-called ‘rubble foundations’ a home is built on. If the foundation can be repaired so that the foundation is in a condition substantially the same as when it was new and the repair work complies with applicable laws, the foundation repair will meet the “replacement value” standard. In other cases, to meet the standard of applicable laws, part or all of the foundation may need to be replaced. EQC considers each repair strategy based on the facts specific to each home. Clean lint filters in your clothes dryer BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Last Saturday a fire reported in a clothes dryer in a commercial building in St Asaph St was dealt with by the two city crews attending using breathing apparatus and fire extinguishers. It’s another timely reminder that colder conditions and the need for drying washing inside must hit us soon considering we’re just a couple of weeks short of officially being in winter. Home tumble dryers are found everywhere and will be utilised more and more as winter bites. They are generally fairly safe but we do occasionally get called out when they ignite. The best prevention for this happening is to clean the lint filter every time before turning the machine on and to make sure someone is home while it’s operating. Then if all does go wrong the result should be no worse than that in St Asaph St. It does tend to ruin your day when contacted at work to be told your house has burned down. Two good examples last weekend of firefighters going the extra mile included the retrieval of a model plane from a tree at QE II and the assistance given to an elderly lady in South New Brighton.

BRYNDWR BRyndWR IS generally identified as being the area around Aorangi and Wairakei Roads. It is one of two suburbs in the norwest of Christchurch (Burnside is the other) which experienced rapid growth when Christchurch expanded out from the city centre in the 1950s and 1960s. This expansion was accelerated due to World War Two ex-servicemen returning to build homes and settle with their families. The name Bryndwr has Welsh origins and was given to the area by European settler Charles Jeffreys, who owned 100 acres of farmland in 1880. The name translates ‘on the brink of the water’. The area was named for the small creeks forming the headwaters of the Waimairi Stream and close proximity to Lake Bryndwr.

Lake Bryndwr was the name given to the three shingle pits fed by an underground spring located in close proximity to Roydvale Avenue and Wairakei Rd. It was quarried by the Ashby Brothers which provided much of the stone and gravel for drives and paths. The main pit, known as Lake Bryndwr, was extremely deep - between 4.5 - 6 metres

DISASTER: Tumble dryers can ignite if they aren’t maintained.

This woman had slipped and crashed through a glass door at her home. She was kept in hospital overnight and then released, only to come home to the still broken door. Wainoni’s crew spent an hour and a half contacting insurance and repair people. They stayed available for further calls but saved some real anguish by taking charge. That’s good work.

BRYNDWR in depth. On the outskirts of the main pit was a race track (1.5 miles in length) where midget cars were raced. The lake was utilised for water skiing and recreational fishing (brown and rainbow trout). A sawmill was located closer to Wairakei Road. The dragline, used to pull the shingle out of the pits, was moved to the Waimakariri Bridge about 1962. Most of the land in Bryndwr and Burnside was farmed for the first hundred years in small blocks to sheep, cattle, market gardening and orchards. In 1878 the Greer homestead was built (now 302 Greers Road) and was a visible landmark

for miles. A church of note in Bryndwr is the St Johns Methodist Church at 49 Bryndwr Road. The church was consecrated in 1927. A memorial lychgate was built at the Methodist Church dedicated to the pioneer methodists of the St Albans circuit. Waimairi School was one of the Bryndwr area’s earliest school. Originally, from 1914 it was a side school of Papanui but came into existence in its own right in 1920. Waimairi School had a large number of children from two orphanages in the area – one Presbyterian, the other Methodist.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Reclaim your identity When it comes to dentures, Christchurch people have access to world-leading techniques and oral aesthetics right on their doorstep. At his Montreal street studio Lovebite, internationally renowned dental technician Richard Greenlees creates beautiful bespoke dentures with small nuances in the fabrication, colour and shape, and even slight imperfections to create a uniquely individual smile. There is no need for dentures to look false. Richard takes a great deal of satisfaction in making bespoke dentures that look 100 per cent real and natural, personally guiding his patients through the transformation process to craft a smile that reflects their individuality and personality, and recreates their natural pre-denture smile. Not only do Lovebite teeth look real, the whole structure and shape of the patient’s face is transformed with Richard’s top-of-the-line dentures, something he calls his signature ‘denture

lift’. “With appropriate facial support, the facial tissues are brought back into the correct position, the lips are reformed, and beauty is restored,” he says. it is the interior architecture of a Lovebite denture that helps to create a more youthful appearance by recovering the face and skeletal shape that can be lost after years of wearing dentures. As the smile is transformed, so are the patient’s confidence, and the way they feel about themselves. Richard’s vast experience includes 15 years of running his own clinic in the prestigious harley st, London, where he treated people from all walks of life, from barrow boys to the rich and famous, politicians, actors and musicians. his techniques are recognised as

These stunning lovebite full upper and lower dentures have been expertly crafted by internationally-recognised dental technician Richard Greenlees at his Christchurch studio. The combination of Richard’s skill, experience (including 15 years in London’s prestigious Harley Street) knowledge and revolutionary techniques allow him to create beautiful bespoke false teeth that truly resemble those in nature and reflect each patient’s individuality and unique character.

world-leading among his international peers, and he is regularly asked to lecture and run courses worldwide. Miles Cone (DMD, Ms, FACP, CDt), a prosthodontist from Oregon, UsA, said in November 2015: “Richard Greenlees’ craftsmanship is as stunning as it is unique. There is liberation in the calculated imperfection, indeed an asperity that reflects a purely human element.” in addition to dentures, Richard also carries out crown and bridge, veneer and implant work, in conjunction with like-minded dental surgeons who complement his creative and aesthetic work. “teeth are as different as fingerprints and vary greatly depending on a person’s age, sex and race. Dentures from Lovebite reflect this, and are as unique and individual as the people they are made for,” says Richard. There is nothing more satisfying for Richard than to see his patients leave the Lovebite studio with their selfconfidence and identity restored, as well as their smile.

Confidence and beauty is restored with a new denture by Lovebite.

Papanui’s Past

SCHOLARSHIPS &

State of the art schools for Christchurch’s east

FAMILY HOME: Judy Pethig’s family moved to Papanui into a property at 56 North Rd, an attractive arts and craft house that still exists.

Street name recognises family’s ties with area MURRAY WILLIAMS, PAPANUI HERITAGE GROUP Judy Pethig (née Tulloch) was born in Wellington in 1939. In 1946 her father, a radio engineer, was transferred to Christchurch to take responsibility for the technical aspects of the state radio network in the South Island. The family moved to Papanui into a property at 56 North Rd, an attractive arts and craft house that still exists. However, appearances were misleading, Judy remembers that the house was, at that stage in poor repair and had not really been properly finished in spite of being supposedly completed in the early 1920s. However, she recalls the wood panelling and the beautiful staircase as well as the lead light windows, the latter evoking mixed feelings as it was her job to clean them, a task she found

difficult and time consuming. Judy attended Papanui Primary School in Winters Rd and then transferred to the Adventist Central School in Grants Rd. Although the school was small, Judy found a very supportive atmosphere and it was decided that she would remain there for her secondary education as it offered the commercial course she wanted. In 1952, Judy’s father purchased land adjoining the family home at 56 North Rd which he developed as a market garden producing fruit and vegetables. One of his customers was St George’s Hospital. Judy helped out and recalls bundling asparagus which was secured with two rubber bands. She also grew gladioli and sold them from the front gate of the property. In 1954, Judy’s father sold enough of his land to develop six residential sections.

The family name is commemorated in the name of this street, Tulloch Pl, which runs off Halliwell Ave. The family later purchased a ladies’ clothing business at 2A North Rd and renamed it Vanity Fair, Judy worked in the shop which was managed by her mother. In 1963, Judy married Ian Pethig, and the reception was held across the road from the family home in the RSA Hall on the corner of Langdons Rd. This site is now occupied by the Westpac Bank. Judy subsequently lived In Windwhistle and Picton for 46 years as her husband worked as an automotive mechanic in these towns. Eventually the attraction of friends and relatives prompted her return to live in the Papanui area.

A performing arts centre, sports facilities, gymnasium, a cutting-edge library and technology suites are just some of the facilities that will be built into the new Avonside girls’ and Shirley Boys’ High Schools. The two schools will be open alongside each other on a new campus in time for the beginning of the 2019

•Judy Pethig’s formative years were spent in Papanui and she has vivid memories of living, learning and working in the area.

school year. The ministry of education is spending at least $80-million on the campus. Qe2 park has been named as the preferred site for the campus, where it could be built alongside the eastern Sport and recreation Centre that will have numerous swimming pools and water facilities. This will be the first time in new Zealand’s history that two single sex schools have co-located. Avonside girls’ principal Sue Hume says the new campus will offer the best of both the single-sex and co-educational worlds. “Students will spend most of their day in a single-sex environment but there will be times when they can interact with students from the other school. for example, we’ll have a shared library, a combined café and an extensive bus network that students from both schools willl use. This enables our students valuable social development,” says Sue Hume. “This will a place the community can be proud of with facilities that everyone will be able to use. We are looking forward to seeing the proposal become reality.”

OPEN EVENING Tuesday 31 May 2016 from 5.00pm – 7.00pm

Riccarton High School Peerswick Scholarship

every yeAr riccarton High School awards two peerswick Scholarships to year 8 students who show strengths in the academic, sporting, cultural and service fields. The term ‘peerswick’ is an Upper riccarton name which has been associated with the school since 1959 when the school magazine was named peerswick. in the latter part of the 19th century, a local horse stud was called

peerswick after a famous racehorse at the stud called The peer and the area was called peerswick for many years. The 2012 winners were Dean Holdaway and rachel Wu. now in year 13, the two have made their mark in the school just as have all the Scholarship winners. Winning the $1,000 peerswick Scholarship was an achievement they were proud of as well as providing a useful investment for the future. At school they gained entrance to the top class, felt confident that they could achieve and seeing their names on the honours board in the hall has been a constant reminder of their potential. Dean came to riccarton from Halswell School, while rachel came from Westburn

School. Both students have a fine pedigree in music. They are members of the new Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony orchestra where they play the clarinet. They have both gained grade 8 in clarinet. rachel was a member of the chamber group ‘papricca’ which won the people’s Choice in the national Chamber music competition, a fine achievement. She also sings in the auditioned choir, ‘Stella Cantare’. Dean plays in the Concert Band and the Jazz Band and last year had the lead role in the school production of ‘Bugsy malone’. Both rachel and Dean have achieved excellence in nCeA in both year 11 and year 12. rachel gained 2nd place in the Brain Bee competition as a year 11 and has gained

distinction in several maths and science competitions. Dean is planning to study electrical engineering at Canterbury, while rachel will study medicine at otago. As year 13s they are very involved in student activities, organising events, mentoring year 9s at the beginning of the year and being role models through the school. They feel well prepared for this task as they have been encouraged to be leaders and show responsibility right from year 9. ‘The peerswick Scholarship was not only wonderful to win, it also gave us a great start as we began our time at riccarton. We have had great years here and this year is no different,’ said Dean.

QE II Park land use under question FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

A surviving member of the New Brighton Trotting Club has signed an affidavit saying that QE II Park was to be set aside “for recreational use only.” Norma Robinson, 88, is “adamant” that an 11.5ha block of land in QE II Park was never intended to be used for educational purposes, and was to be used by “the people of Christchurch.” Mrs Robinson wrote an affidavit last week, stating that the condition of the land sale to the city council in 1963 was that the land was to be set aside as a park for the people to use recreationally. Christchurch Concerned Citizens Group chairman Garry House is leading the charge against the city council. “We found a committee member from the trotting club, we think she’s the last

surviving member. She has taken the steps of signing an affidavit, which is a legal document that can be used in court. It’s very seriously dealt with if found to be wrong, and she’s thought of that,” he said. Mr House (left) said the group had not decided whether they would be taking the city council to court over the land sale, but said he would “rather negotiate and see where it goes.” He said the group will meet on Sunday to discuss their options, which include “considering taking legal action” if the council didn’t negotiate with them. Mr House said the group would be pushing for Christchurch to get a fair deal. “We always try and negotiate for the best deal for the citizens on the east, and indeed for Christchurch,” he said. A city council spokeswoman said the affidavit will be considered by the hearings panel and the city council when they consider whether to proceed with the proposed disposal of the land, or not.

hile first aid courses must achieve prescribed new Zealand Qualification Authority (nZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting nZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight. nZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for first aid training based on currently registered nZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names. employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks. Unit standard-based first aid training The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be for training based on: • unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551), a minimum of 12 hours’ training and assessment • unit standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training

and assessment • For refresher training where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours’ training and assessment First aid training must cover the outcomes of the nZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. Only first aid training providers accredited by nZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. nZQA conduct regular external evaluative reviews on all training providers. new Zealand red Cross is proud to hold a double highly Confident accreditation in both educational Performance and Capability in self-Assessment. This means that nZ red Cross is a Category One training provider. First aid refresher training refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. The requirement allows for a three-month period of grace, so the cut off period is two years and three months, which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course. If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency. For the purposes of workplace first aid emergency management, employers will need to ensure that their first aid personnel maintain competency at all times.

THE ROYAL New Zealand Air Force Band is celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday in style with a special afternoon concert at the New Zealand Air Force Museum at Wigram on Sunday 5th June. Surrounded by the museum's mighty collection of Air Force history, the band will perform music that spans the nine decades of the Queen's life so far. The afternoon performance on June 5th features a segment dedicated to music by British composers, from Walton's stirring Crown Imperial March, to excerpts from popular musical theatre, through to the theme music for the James Bond 007 movies. During the RNZAF Band's last performance at the Air Force Museum in 2015, the band's 65 strong brass and woodwinds under the baton of Flight Lieutenant Brew received a standing ovation from the packed house. “We're looking forward to Walton's Crown Imperial March, and we'll also reference some great British artists including The Beatles, Queen and David Bowie,” Flight Lieutenant Brew said. “Our band is wonderfully versatile. We'll be taking the opportunity to feature some of our virtuoso players in solo

pieces at Wigram.” The Queen's Birthday concert programme will also include Gershwin's An American in Paris, Glinka's Russlan and Ludmila Overture, as well as a full symphonic version of the impressive soundtracks from the Star Wars movies. Flight Lieutenant Brew recently traveled with the NZ Defence Force Contingent to conduct services at Gallipoli. The RNZAF Band performed in February at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo during the NZ Festival in Wellington. Air Force Band in concert at the New Zealand Air Force Museum, Wigram th Sunday 5 June, 2pm, New Zealand Air Force Museum, Wigram. Adult: $25, Senior $22 Child/Student: $5 Tickets: New Zealand Air Force Museum (03) 343 - 9532.
